The Opportunity

We are seeking the right person for a Staff Lawyer position to join our growing practice. The successful candidate will support the Managing Lawyer and attend to client work in corporate, commercial, and related transactional matters and contract review / drafting and interacting with clients. 

This role offers flexibility, a supportive mentoring environment, and exposure to complex and meaningful transactions. There are no business development expectations at all with this role; the focus is on the firm’s existing workload and delivering efficient, high quality legal work, responsive client service, and effective collaboration.  Your evenings, weekends and holidays will be yours to enjoy as you please.  

This position is ideal for a disciplined and diligent lawyer who values true work-life balance and flexibility without the pressures of developing a client base or marketing a practice. The right candidate will be self-motivated and reliable, capable of working independently while engaging with the Managing Lawyer and team members as needed to meet client expectations and deliver high-quality work. You will have the flexibility to develop a work plan suited to your situation, allowing you to work remote and on site in our West Bedford office (easy to get to, lots of parking, amenities). 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with corporate/commercial transactions, secured lending, and related matters as assigned by the Managing Lawyer.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, and financing documents.
  • Direct and complete due diligence as required from time to time.
  • Conduct legal research, prepare/revise legal opinions, and support client communications.
  • Collaborate with clients, financial institutions, and other counsel to advance transactions efficiently.
  • Maintain organized files, meet deadlines, and uphold firm standards of professionalism and service.
  • Diligently keep and record time spent on each file on a daily basis

Ideal Skills and Attributes

  • Strong understanding of business law, real estate, and financing principles.
  • Excellent drafting, analytical, and organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail.
  • Professional judgment and initiative to work independently and as part of a small team.
  • Client-focused with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency technology and with
  • Comfortable adapting to change of priorities as needed from time to time.
  • Microsoft 365, law firm and document management software, and legal research tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.).
  • Member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society (or eligible for admission).
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in corporate/commercial, real estate law preferred.
